Chapter 11

“So, what’s new with you apart from this case?” Andy asked when we were seated at a local bistro. We had ordered at the counter and were waiting for our food to arrive, seated in a corner booth by the window, perfect for people-watching but also allowing us a little bit of privacy.

“Well, I went to Italy for a couple days. I had a job there.”

“Did you really? It’s over?”

“Sure is. I always get my man, after all. Or in this case, my teddy bear.”

Andy’s eyebrows rose. “Teddy bear?”

“This is a great story,” I said with a grin.

By the time I was finished telling it, a fairy with golden wings had brought over our lunch, and Andy was trying to stop tears of laughter from streaming down his face.

“I can’t believe that happened,” he said, shaking his head as he grabbed a spoon to dig into his chili baked potato. “Seriously, it makes me glad we don’t have criminals like that here in Mt. Rheanier.”

“Well, not right now, anyway.”

“It’s also surprising that they brought in a private investigator.”

“Hey, my skills are being talked about far and wide,” I said with a grin.

“Of course, I’m not talking about that. But the Florhex Enforcers are still Enforcers. They’re not supposed to bring in private investigators. Not only would they face scrutiny on the cost, but there’s an unspoken about ideal that Enforcers are supposed to be the best at law enforcement and at solving crimes. By bringing in an outsider, they’re admitting that they aren’t the best at solving crimes, and you never know how a populace will react to that idea.”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I think it says something about an Enforcement officer if he or she is willing to admit that they’re out of their depth and need additional help.”

Andy considered my words. “I guess so. I suppose it helps when it’s a lower-stakes crime too. But if Enforcers start having to bring in outside help to solve murders, it’s not going to reflect very well on our own abilities.”

“Well, I’d join the Enforcer force, but I’d have to take a pay cut,” I said smugly before taking a big bite of my BLT.

Andy laughed. “That’s a good point. Maybe I should take after you and go through the private system. Of course, the fact that you have exactly zero formal training probably shouldn’t be a point in your favor.”

“On the contrary, it’s totally an advantage,” I replied. “You’re such a stickler for rules, and making sure you do everything by the book, and that your interviews go a certain way, because you’ve been trained to do things that way. I have no such training, so I can just follow my instincts at every turn. And so far, they’ve been pretty spot-on, you have to admit.”

“I do concede you’ve had a lot of success in a short period of time. It’s certainly more than can be attributed to beginner’s luck. You’re skilled. I just wish you’d be more careful.
